One of the most common questions we hear behind the chair at Sølvi is some version of "how do I keep my hair looking like it does when I leave the studio." Boise makes that harder than it should be. Our high desert air pulls moisture out of hair fast, and by late afternoon a lot of our clients are fighting frizz and a dull, thirsty-looking finish. Davines Oi Liquid Luster is one of the bottles we reach for most to fix exactly that, and it is genuinely easy to use at home once you know the rhythm. Here is how our stylists use it, step by step.
First, a quick honest description so you know what you are working with. Oi Liquid Luster is a weightless softener built around Roucou oil. The Roucou is the workhorse here. It softens and smooths the hair without weighing it down, and it leaves an antioxidant finish that helps tame flyaways and frizz. It works across hair types, from fine to coarse, and it carries the signature Oi scent that tends to linger through the day. It runs $57 in the studio and lasts a long time because you use so little. That last part matters, and it is the key to using it well at home.
Step 1: Start with clean, damp hair
Liquid Luster is designed to go on damp hair, not soaking wet and not bone dry. Wash and condition as usual, then towel-dry until your hair is no longer dripping. We like to gently squeeze sections in a microfiber towel rather than rough-drying with a regular bath towel, which roughs up the cuticle and undoes some of the smoothing you are about to add. Damp hair lets the oil distribute evenly instead of sitting in patches.
Step 2: Use a small amount, then stop
This is the step people get wrong. Liquid Luster is concentrated, so a small amount is the whole point. For most of our clients, a few drops in the palm is enough. If you have long or coarse hair you can go slightly bigger, but start small. You can always add more. You cannot easily take it back out without rewashing. Rub it between your palms first so it warms up and spreads, rather than dropping it straight onto one spot.
Step 3: Work it through and comb
Apply through the mid-lengths and ends first, where hair is oldest and driest, and only bring it up toward the roots if your ends already have enough. Then comb it through. A wide-tooth comb pulls the product evenly from root to tip and is the difference between glossy and greasy. This even distribution is what gives you that smooth, lit-from-within shine instead of a few shiny streaks.
Step 4: Style as normal, then set a rhythm
From here you style the way you always do. Air dry, diffuse, blow out, or smooth with a brush. Liquid Luster plays nicely with heat and gives a little extra slip that makes a blow-dry faster and smoother. In our dry Boise climate, this is also where you lock in some frizz control for the day. If you want to refresh second-day hair, warm a single drop and run it over the surface and ends to revive shine without rewashing. As for how often, there is no strict rule. Fine hair usually does best two or three times a week so it never reads heavy, while coarse, dry, or frizz-prone hair can handle it daily. Watch how your hair looks the next morning and adjust from there.
Who it is not for
We try to be straight with people, so here is the honest part. Liquid Luster is a softener and a shine finisher, not a styling product, which means it gives you zero hold. If you need a product that builds volume or keeps a shape locked in, this is not that bottle, and you will want something else in the lineup. It also punishes a heavy hand. On fine hair especially, too much will look greasy and flat fast, so if you tend to overpour, this takes some restraint. And if your goal is a matte, undone texture, the glossy finish here works against you.
