Su Hair Milk: A Stylist's Review

A regular client sat in Autumn Schiess's chair last week, ran her fingers through her roots, and said her hair felt coated no matter how often she washed it. She lives a few blocks from our studio, walks to work, and reaches for dry shampoo most mornings. That mix of product layering and our dry Idaho air is exactly the situation the Davines Detoxifying Scrub Shampoo was built for. Autumn ran one detox wash through her hair, followed with a moisturizing conditioner, and the change was easy to see. Her roots lifted, the dull film was gone, and her color looked bright again instead of flat. We carry this shampoo on the shelf at Solvi, so the honest question owners ask us is simple. Is it worth $40? Here is our real answer from behind the chair.

What it actually is

The Davines Detoxifying Scrub Shampoo is a clarifying, build-up focused cleanser from the Naturaltech line. It works two ways. Fine silica scrub particles give the scalp a gentle physical exfoliation that lifts away residue, and artichoke leaf extract delivers an antioxidant, anti-pollution finish that helps protect the hair from free radicals and environmental stress. Jojoba esters and glycerin sit in the formula too, which is why it cleans deeply without the stripped feeling some clarifying shampoos leave behind. It runs $40 for the 8.45 fl oz bottle. The job it is designed to do is lift the residue regular shampoo leaves behind, things like styling product, mineral deposits, and dry shampoo that has stacked up over a week or two.

Who it is genuinely good for

If your hair feels heavy at the root, looks dull even right after a wash, or your color is going flat sooner than it should, this is the cleanser we reach for. Boise water and our low humidity are a real factor here. We see build-up problems in Idaho more than people expect, partly because dry air makes us lean on leave-in products and dry shampoo to stretch washes. Those products have to come off eventually. A detox wash every week or two clears the slate so the rest of your routine can do its job. Fine hair that goes limp by midday tends to respond fast, and so does anyone who swims or works out hard.

The honest drawback

Now for the straight talk. This is not your everyday shampoo, and it is not for everyone. If you have dry, color-treated, or curly hair that already runs thirsty, a clarifying wash used too often can leave you feeling stripped. We have had clients fall in love with the clean feeling, use it three times a week, and then wonder why their ends feel rough. The fix is simple. Treat it as a reset, not a daily habit. Most heads only need it every one to two weeks, followed by a moisturizing conditioner or mask. If your hair is naturally dry as it is, this may not earn a spot in your lineup at all, and we would rather tell you that than sell you a bottle you do not need.

How we use it at Solvi

In the studio we work a small amount through wet hair, massage it into the scalp where most build-up hides, and let it sit for a minute before rinsing. One round is usually plenty. We almost always follow with a conditioner because a clean cuticle drinks in moisture better. If you are coming in for color, a detox wash a day or two before your appointment helps the formula grab evenly, which is something we are happy to walk you through during a consultation. You can see what that looks like on our services page.

Our honest verdict

Is the Detoxifying Scrub Shampoo worth it? For the right head of hair, yes. At $40 a bottle used every week or two, it lasts a long time and solves a real problem that dry Boise air makes worse. The gentle surfactant system, with jojoba and glycerin, is what keeps it from feeling harsh the way some clarifying shampoos do, and the artichoke leaf extract leaves a clean antioxidant finish on top of it. For someone with dry or fragile hair who washes daily, we would point you somewhere gentler instead. If you are not sure which camp you fall into, that is what we are here for. Autumn Schiess, our owner and lead stylist, has spent more than 18 years behind the chair and built Solvi on the Scandinavian idea of clean, intentional choices, which you can read about on our about page.
