Boise gives hair a hard time. Our high-desert air sits low on humidity most of the year, and between the winter dryness and the summer sun coming off the foothills, we watch a lot of clients walk into our downtown studio at 104 S Capitol Blvd with hair that feels rough, staticky, and thirsty. One of the products our stylists at Sølvi keep reaching for in those moments is the Davines Nourishing Hair Building Pak, a weightless softener that does its job without the heaviness so many finishing products bring. Here is why it has earned a spot in our kits.
What it actually is
The name throws people off, so let us clear it up first. This is not a deep mask or a bond-repair treatment. It is a light leave-in softener you work through clean, damp hair before you style. The hero ingredient is roucou oil, which smooths and softens the hair surface and leaves an antioxidant finish that helps tame flyaways and frizz. It also carries the signature Davines scent, which is subtle and lingers through the day without taking over. At $49 it is a premium styling product, and we will be honest about that further down.
Why the Boise climate makes it click
Dry air is the enemy of soft, polished hair. When the moisture leaves the air, it pulls moisture out of the cuticle, and that is when you get the frizz halo and the static that makes fine hair float. Behind the chair we see this most from November through February and again in the dry heat of July. The roucou oil in this softener gives the hair a smooth, sealed feel that holds up against that dryness. We have clients who used to fight their hair every morning in winter, and a small amount of this through damp hair has cut that fight down considerably.
How our stylists use it
A little goes a long way, and that is the part most people get wrong at home. We take a small amount, roughly a dime size for medium-length hair, warm it between the palms, and work it through clean, damp hair from mid-length to ends. Comb through, then style as usual. Because it is weightless, it layers nicely under a blow-dry without leaving that greasy weight on the roots. If you have finer hair, start with even less and build up. You can always add more, you cannot easily take it back out.
Who it is great for, and who it is not
This works across hair types, from fine to coarse, which is rare for a softener. Fine-haired clients love it because it does not flatten their hair, and our coarser, curlier clients get smoothing without the crunch. That said, we want to be straight with you. If your hair is genuinely damaged, broken, or chemically compromised, this is a finisher and not a fix. It will make damaged hair look and feel better in the moment, but it does not rebuild the hair. For that you want a treatment, and we are happy to point you toward the right one during a consultation. The $49 price also puts it on the higher end of styling products, so if you are buying purely on cost, there are cheaper options that simply will not feel the same.
How it fits a real routine
The nice thing about this softener is that it slots into whatever you already do. Daily, weekly, before a blow-dry, or just on air-dry days when you want your hair to behave. We reach for it most when a client tells us their hair feels rough or looks dull, because it brings back that soft, shiny finish quickly. It pairs well with the styling work we do during our color and cut appointments, and a lot of clients pick it up on the way out so they can keep that fresh-from-the-chair feel going at home.
The bottom line from behind the chair
We do not put anything on the Sølvi shelves that we do not use ourselves, and this one earns its keep in our dry Boise climate. It is weightless, it smooths, and it makes hair feel cared for without the heaviness. If you want to see whether it suits your hair, grab the Nourishing Hair Building Pak from our retail shelf, take a look at our salon services to plan your next visit, or book an appointment and let one of our stylists show you how to use it on your hair in person.
