Essentials Sample Set: A Stylist's Review

Every week, someone settles into the chair at our downtown studio and asks the same honest question. They have a closet shelf of half-used bottles, none of them quite right, and they want to know which Davines shampoo and conditioner is actually theirs. That is the exact problem an Essentials sample set is built to solve, so we wanted to write down what we have learned recommending it behind the chair at Sølvi.

What it actually is

The Davines Essentials range is not one product. It is a family of concern-specific lines, each built as a matched shampoo and conditioner pair. Momo leans into hydration, Melu protects length, Nounou is the rich repair line, Volu adds body to fine hair, and there are a handful more. A sample set lets you try the line, or a few lines, in small sizes before you commit to full bottles. The whole idea is line-matched plant ingredients, formulas designed to work together rather than a shampoo from one brand fighting a conditioner from another.

That matching is the part people underestimate. When the cleanser and the conditioner are engineered as a system, your hair behaves more predictably. We see it on the wet test at the backwash, and clients usually feel it the first time they style at home.

How it performs through a Boise winter

Boise air is dry, and it gets drier the higher up the foothills you live. A lot of the frizz and static we troubleshoot from December through March is not damage, it is dehydration. Trying a small bottle for a week or two is the fastest way to find out whether your hair wants the heavier Nounou pair or whether a lighter hydrating line keeps you from going flat by Friday.

We have had clients swear they needed the richest repair formula, sample it for ten days, and realize it was weighing their hair down. The set let them course correct without eating the cost of a full-size bottle they would never finish. That is the quiet value here. It turns a guess into a short, low-stakes test.

Who we hand it to

This is our go-to for anyone new to salon-grade haircare, anyone in between brands, and clients who travel and want a tidy carry-on size. It is also genuinely useful as a gift, because you are giving someone a chance to find their match instead of guessing for them.

If you want to see the full Essentials family and the individual lines, our team keeps the range stocked through the Davines Essentials collection, and we are always happy to talk through your hair in person at a service appointment.

The honest drawback

Here is where we stay straight with you. Sample sizes run out fast. If you already know your line, buying the small bottles is a worse value per ounce than going straight to full size, and you will be back sooner than you think. We have also seen the small bottles tempt people into switching lines every couple of weeks, which never lets any single formula prove itself. Hair responds to consistency. Give one pairing two to three weeks before you decide.

So this is not for the client who already has their ride-or-die system dialed in. For them, full bottles or a liter are the smarter buy, and we will tell you that to your face rather than upsell a set you do not need.

How we recommend using it

Pick one line based on your main concern, not three. Use the pair exclusively for at least two weeks, washing the way you normally would. Pay attention to how your hair feels on day two and day three, not just fresh out of the shower, because that is where dry Idaho air shows its hand. If it still feels good unstyled at the end of the week, you have found your match.

If you are not sure which concern to start with, that is the easiest thing in the world to sort out in person. Bring us your current routine and we will narrow it down in a few minutes.

Our take

An Essentials sample set is one of the few products we recommend partly because it might lead you to buy less from us, not more. It cuts down on the shelf of wrong bottles, it respects how dry our climate really is, and it lets your hair do the deciding. For most people figuring out their Davines line, it is the right first step.

If you want a stylist to help you choose, book with us at Sølvi. We are at 104 S Capitol Blvd in downtown Boise, and finding your match is one of our favorite parts of the job.
