What Hand-Tied Extensions Are

Hand-tied wefts are a panel of high-quality human hair sewn by hand onto a thin track. We attach them to your head by creating a beaded row across the back, then sewing the weft onto that row. They sit flat against your scalp, move naturally, and grow out cleanly when reapplied on schedule.

This is one of the most-requested extension methods in Boise, and for good reason: when done well, hand-tied wefts look and feel like your own hair, only with more density and length.

Who They Are Best For

  • Medium to thick hair that wants real length or density
  • Shoulder-length hair that wants to go past bra-strap
  • Anyone wanting fullness through the body of the hair, not just the ends
  • Guests willing to commit to a 6 to 8 week move-up schedule

For fine hair, we usually recommend Genius wefts instead. Read our guide on extensions for fine hair.

The Sølvi Hand-Tied Process

Step 1: Edit Consultation ($50, applied to install)

Every extension service starts here. Thirty minutes with your stylist. We look at your hair, evaluate density and condition, discuss goals, show hair samples, and map out a quote. You leave with a specific dollar amount, not a range.

Step 2: Custom Hair Ordering

We source from multiple professional hair companies so we can match your color almost exactly. For dimensional color (balayage, money pieces, multi-tone blondes), we blend two or three tones at the root. Your hair is ordered specifically for you and arrives 1 to 2 weeks before your install.

Step 3: Install Day

Most full installs take 3 to 4 hours. We create beaded rows across the back of your head, then sew the hand-tied wefts onto those rows. The install is comfortable, the result is immediate, and you walk out with hair styled to take home.

Step 4: Move-Ups Every 6 to 8 Weeks

As your hair grows, the rows shift away from the scalp. Move-up appointments take 1 to 2 hours. We remove the wefts, reposition the rows higher, and reinstall. The same hair stays in place, just tightened.

What Makes Sølvi Different

  • Method over brand. We do not lock you into one hair brand. We pick the right quality for your hair and your budget.
  • Transparent pricing. You leave the consultation with a specific quote, not a "starting at" line.
  • Custom color blending. We blend multiple tones at the root for dimensional, natural-looking blends.
  • Real maintenance plan. Every install comes with a written care plan, product recommendations, and a built-in move-up schedule.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who are hand-tied extensions best for?

Hand-tied wefts are best for medium to thick hair that wants real density and length. They sit flat against the scalp, blend cleanly, and grow out well when reapplied on schedule.

How long do hand-tied extensions last?

The hair itself typically lasts 6 to 12 months with proper care and move-ups every 6 to 8 weeks. Some guests get 18 months out of one set.

How much do hand-tied extensions cost in Boise?

Most full hand-tied installs at Sølvi Salon run $800 to $2400 including hair. The exact price depends on the number of rows and the length you want.

How often do hand-tied extensions need to be moved up?

Every 6 to 8 weeks. Move-ups involve removing the wefts, repositioning the beaded rows, and reinstalling. Skipping move-ups causes the bonds to shift and can damage your natural hair.

Can I shower and sleep with hand-tied extensions?

Yes. We send every guest home with a specific routine: brush with a loop brush, use sulfate-free shampoo, sleep with hair braided or in a silk scrunchie, and avoid sleeping on wet hair.

Are hand-tied extensions visible at the part?

Not when installed correctly. We place rows lower than the crown so nothing shows when you wear your hair up, and we custom-color the hair to blend at the root.
