What a Smoothing Treatment Actually Does

If you spend way too much time fighting frizz, dealing with humidity, or blow-drying for an hour every morning, a smoothing treatment changes your life. We coat each strand with a smoothing formula that locks down the cuticle, reduces frizz, cuts your dry time in half, and leaves your hair manageable for months.

This is not the same as a relaxer. Relaxers permanently change your hair structure. Smoothing treatments are temporary and gradually wash out over 3 to 5 months. You can adjust how often you do them, you can stop doing them anytime, and your hair returns to its natural state.

Brazilian Blowout vs Keratin: Which One

Both are smoothing treatments, but the formulas, processes, and results differ. At Sølvi, we offer both and help you pick based on your hair and what you want.

Brazilian Blowout

  • Works on any hair type, including color-treated and chemically processed
  • Washes out gradually over 3 to 4 months
  • Can be washed and styled immediately after the appointment
  • Customizable: we can leave more or less smoothing in based on your goal
  • Best for: most clients, especially first-time smoothing treatment users

Keratin Treatment

  • Stronger smoothing effect for coarse, very frizz-prone hair
  • Lasts 4 to 6 months
  • Requires not washing hair for 72 hours after the appointment
  • Best for: clients with curly or coarse hair who want maximum frizz control

Idaho's Climate Makes Smoothing Treatments Worth It

Boise's climate is brutal on hair. Dry winters strip moisture and create flyaways. Summer humidity puffs up the cuticle and creates frizz. A smoothing treatment seals the cuticle so your hair is protected against both extremes. This is why smoothing is one of our most-booked services from October through March and again from June through August.

The Sølvi Smoothing Process

Step 1: Consultation

We evaluate your hair type, color history, and what you want from the treatment. Total straightness? Soft wave? Frizz control without losing volume? We pick the formula based on your answer.

Step 2: Clarifying Wash

The treatment needs a clean canvas. We wash with a clarifying shampoo to remove product buildup, oils, and anything that would block the formula from absorbing.

Step 3: Application

We section your hair and apply the smoothing formula evenly from root to ends. Processing time depends on the formula, usually 20 to 40 minutes.

Step 4: Heat Sealing

Once processed, we blow dry the hair and flat iron each section to seal the treatment in. This is the step that locks the smoothing into the cuticle.

Step 5: Rinse and Finish (Brazilian Blowout)

For Brazilian Blowouts, we rinse, condition, and blow dry to finish. You leave with smooth, polished hair you can wash and style immediately.

Pricing

  • Smoothing treatment (short hair): starting at $300
  • Smoothing treatment (mid-length): $400 to $500
  • Smoothing treatment (long hair): $500 to $600

We confirm the exact quote at consultation based on your hair length, density, and the formula we use.

Aftercare

  • Use sulfate-free shampoo. Sulfates strip the smoothing treatment. We recommend Davines OI, NouNou, or Heart of Glass.
  • Use a leave-in conditioner daily. Locks in moisture and extends the life of the treatment.
  • Avoid chlorine and saltwater. Both can shorten the treatment life. Swim cap if you can, leave-in spray before getting in if you cannot.
  • Heat protect every time. Even with smoothing, hair appreciates heat protection.

When to Re-Book

Most clients re-book at 3 to 4 months. You will know it is time when frizz starts returning at the hairline, dry time creeps back up, or the smoothness at the ends starts to soften. We can keep you on a regular schedule or do a touch-up service in between full treatments.

Service Area

We are based in downtown Boise at 104 South Capitol Boulevard, Suite 200, serving smoothing treatment clients across the Treasure Valley: Meridian, Eagle, Nampa, Star, Kuna, Garden City, Caldwell, Middleton, and Emmett.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a Brazilian Blowout and a keratin treatment?

Both are smoothing treatments, but the formulas and processes differ. Brazilian Blowout is a brand-name treatment that works on any hair type and washes out gradually. Traditional keratin treatments use a different active ingredient and typically require not washing for 72 hours after the appointment. At Sølvi, we help you pick the right formula based on your hair type and how much smoothing you actually want.

How long does a smoothing treatment last?

Smoothing treatments at Sølvi typically last 3 to 5 months depending on your hair type, your wash routine, and how you style it at home. Sulfate-free shampoo and a leave-in conditioner extend the life significantly.

How much does a smoothing treatment cost in Boise?

Smoothing treatments at Sølvi start at $300 and range up to $600 depending on hair length, density, and the formula we use. We confirm the exact quote at consultation.

Will a smoothing treatment make my hair straight?

Not necessarily. We can customize the result. Some clients want completely straight hair, others want soft waves that are easier to manage. We adjust the application technique to match your goal.

How long does the appointment take?

Most smoothing treatments take 2 to 4 hours depending on hair length and density. We do a consultation first to confirm the formula, then apply, process, and seal in the treatment.

Is a smoothing treatment safe for color-treated hair?

Yes, when done correctly. Some formulas even improve color longevity. We use formulas that are safe for color-treated, highlighted, and balayage hair, and we plan the appointment so color and smoothing work together.

Can I get a smoothing treatment if I am pregnant?

We do not recommend smoothing treatments during pregnancy. Most formulas have ingredients that, while safe for general use, are not recommended during pregnancy. We will postpone the appointment until after you are cleared by your doctor.

Will my hair feel weighed down after the treatment?

No, when the formula matches your hair type. We use lighter formulas for fine hair and stronger formulas for coarse, frizz-prone hair. The result should feel softer and smoother, not flat.
