When You Need a Color Correction

You might need a correction if any of these sound familiar:

  • You went to a different salon and came home with hair you did not ask for
  • You used box dye and it turned out way darker or warmer than the photo on the box
  • Your blonde has gone brassy or yellow and a gloss is not fixing it
  • Your balayage has banded into stripes instead of soft melts
  • You tried to go from black to blonde at home and now have orange patches
  • Your color was applied unevenly and the dimension is off
  • You want to undo a permanent color change and get back to your natural

Color corrections are not the same as a regular color appointment. They take longer, cost more, and almost always require multiple sessions. We are upfront about that from the start.

Why Color Correction Is a Specialty Service

Most stylists can do a color appointment. Far fewer can plan and execute a correction. The difference is being able to look at your hair right now, understand exactly what is in it (chemically), and chart a path to where you want to be without destroying the hair in the process.

At Sølvi, our owner and lead stylist Autumn Schiess handles most color corrections. Eighteen years of experience and a specific focus on color correction means she has seen almost every version of "this went wrong" and knows how to fix it carefully.

The Sølvi Correction Process

Step 1: In-Person Consultation ($50, Applied to Service)

Every correction starts here. We need to see your hair in our salon lighting, evaluate the condition, ask about your color history (every product that has touched your hair in the last 12 months matters), and discuss your goals. You leave with a realistic plan, a price range, and an honest answer to whether your goal is achievable in 1 session or needs multiple visits.

Step 2: First Correction Session

Most first sessions focus on stabilizing the hair. We pull as much unwanted pigment as we safely can, then tone or gloss the result, then do a bond-building treatment. You leave with hair in a better place than it started, even if we are not yet at the final goal.

Step 3: Follow-Up Sessions

Spaced 4 to 8 weeks apart, depending on hair condition. We continue adjusting tone, lifting where needed, and protecting the hair throughout. The goal is final-color reached without damage.

Step 4: Maintenance

Once we reach your goal, we move you onto a regular color schedule. Most corrected hair benefits from gloss services every 6 to 8 weeks to keep the tone where we put it.

Pricing

  • Consultation: $50 (applied to first correction session)
  • Simple tone correction: $300 to $500 (single session)
  • Banding or unevenness correction: $500 to $900 (1 to 2 sessions)
  • Box dye removal: $800 to $1500+ (typically 2 to 3 sessions)
  • Dramatic correction (black to blonde, etc.): $1200 to $2000+ (multi-session plan)

We give you a specific quote at consultation. Never on the day of service.

What Makes Sølvi's Approach Different

  • Hair integrity first. We will not destroy your hair to get to your goal in one day. Multi-session is the safe path.
  • Bond-building throughout. Every correction includes bond-protection treatments. Your hair feels better leaving than arriving.
  • Honest planning. If your goal is not achievable, we say so. If it is, we map the path clearly.
  • Eighteen years of correction experience. Autumn has seen almost every version of "this went wrong" and knows how to fix it.

What We Cannot Fix in One Visit

We are honest about this because too many salons promise the moon and deliver damage. Things that require multiple sessions:

  • Going from very dark to very light (5+ levels of lift)
  • Removing built-up box dye
  • Repairing chemically damaged hair (we will do a deep condition first, then color)
  • Going from black-box-dye to natural blonde
  • Removing very dark warm tones from previously highlighted hair

If a salon promises you these in one visit, find a different salon.

Service Area

We are located in downtown Boise at 104 South Capitol Boulevard, Suite 200. We work with color correction clients across the Treasure Valley: Meridian, Eagle, Nampa, Star, Kuna, Garden City, Caldwell, Middleton, and Emmett.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a color correction?

Color correction is the process of fixing, neutralizing, or undoing a previous color result. That can mean removing brassy tones, lifting from too dark, evening out banding, fixing a botched balayage, or repairing damage from box dye. It is a specialty service, not the same as a regular color appointment.

How much does a color correction cost in Boise?

Color corrections at Sølvi Salon range from $300 for a simple tone or gloss correction up to $1500 or more for a multi-session full correction. Most corrections need 2 to 4 hours minimum. We confirm the exact quote at consultation, never on the day of the appointment.

Can you fix box dye?

Yes, but it takes time and patience. Box dye is one of the hardest things to remove because the pigment is heavily deposited and often unevenly distributed. Most box dye corrections require 2 to 3 sessions spread across several months. We will tell you honestly what is realistic in your first session.

How many sessions will my correction take?

Most corrections need 2 to 4 sessions over 3 to 6 months. Trying to do everything in one day damages the hair. We protect your hair integrity above all else. Some corrections (a simple tone fix, for example) can be done in a single session.

Do I need a consultation before booking a correction?

Yes, always. Every color correction at Sølvi starts with an in-person consultation. We need to see your hair in our lighting, evaluate condition, ask about your color history, and map out a realistic plan. The consultation is $50, applied to your first correction session.

Will my hair be damaged after a correction?

Not when done correctly. We use bond-building treatments throughout every correction to protect the hair. Damage usually happens when corrections are rushed (trying to do everything in one day) or when stylists skip protective treatments. Our pace is built around hair health, not speed.

What does the first correction session look like?

Most first sessions focus on stabilizing the hair and getting closer to a workable canvas. That might mean removing as much of the unwanted pigment as we safely can, then toning, then doing a deep bond-building treatment. You leave with hair in a better place than it started, even if we are not yet at the final goal.

Can color correction be done same-day as my consultation?

Sometimes. Simple tone corrections (brassy blonde, faded balayage, wrong gloss) can often be handled in the same appointment as the consultation. Complex corrections (box dye removal, banding, dramatic lift) require a separate booking after we order any specialty products needed.
