Most brides who reach out about wedding day extensions are surprised to learn there are several different ways to add length and fullness, and that picking the right one matters more than picking the right look.
I run the extension program at Sølvi Salon in downtown Boise. I have been a hair stylist and color and extension specialist for more than 18 years, and I install hand-tied wefts, genius wefts, k-tips, and bridal day clip ins. Here is the honest version of what each one does and which one fits which kind of bride.
The Three Most Common Bridal Extension Options
1. Bridal Day Clip Ins
Clip ins are temporary extensions installed on the wedding morning and removed at the end of the day. The advantage is flexibility. They cost less than a permanent install. They can come out for the reception if you want a different look. They work for brides whose hair is already healthy and full and just needs a boost for photos.
The downside is they are visible to anyone touching your hair. They can shift if the install is rushed. And they do not solve the problem of fine hair that needs density at the root, only at length.
Best for: brides with healthy mid-length hair who want extra fullness at the ends for photos. Cost range: clip in set plus install service, usually $400 to $800 total.
2. Hand-Tied Wefts
Hand-tied wefts are sewn flat against your scalp on a beaded foundation. They feel and look like your real hair because they are installed permanently for 6 to 8 weeks at a time. For a wedding, we install them 4 to 6 weeks before the date so they have time to settle in and feel like part of you.
The advantage is they are invisible. They give you both length and fullness. They photograph beautifully because there is no hardware to hide. They work for fine hair, thick hair, and everything in between.
The downside is the upfront investment. A full bridal install is a real number, often $1,200 to $2,400 for the hair plus the install. They also need maintenance every 6 to 8 weeks if you want to keep them after the wedding.
Best for: brides who want extensions for the long haul, not just the wedding. Or brides whose hair is fine enough that clip ins won't sit right.
3. Genius Wefts and K-Tips
These are micro-bead and keratin tip methods. They install as small individual sections rather than long flat wefts. They are excellent for very fine hair, for adding density at the root, and for brides who want a more modular feel where pieces can be moved or removed without redoing the whole install.
For weddings, k-tips are a popular pick because they let us add fullness without the bulk of a full hand-tied set. They cost in the same general range as hand-tied.
When to Decide
The decision happens at the bridal trial. We assess your hair, look at the inspiration photos, and figure out which extension method gets you the look without overworking your hair. If you book the trial 4 to 6 months out, we have plenty of time to order hair, install it, and settle it before the wedding.
If you are reading this less than 6 weeks before your wedding and you want extensions, book a trial right now. Hair has to be ordered. Color matched. Installed. We can pull it off in a tight window but only if we start immediately.
Caring For Your Wedding Extensions
Whether you go clip in or permanent, the products you use matter. Sulfate free shampoo. Heat protectant before any styling. Avoid heavy oils on the bond points or beads. Sleep with your hair in a loose braid the night before the wedding. Use a silk pillowcase if you have permanent extensions.
For maintenance shampoo and conditioner, my recommendation for most extension wearers is the Davines Heart of Glass system. The shampoo and the Heart of Glass conditioner are gentle enough for color treated hair and won't strip the bonds.
Common Mistakes
Brides ordering extensions online and asking us to install them. We don't, because we cannot guarantee the quality of hair we did not source. Cheap hair photographs poorly. We use professional grade hair only.
Trying to match extensions to a hair color you are about to change. Color the hair first, then order extensions to match. Not the other way around.
Treating clip ins like permanent extensions. They are not. They come out at the end of the day, and they need a careful hand on the wedding morning so they don't pull or shift.
