Hair Extensions 101: What You Need to Know Before Your First Appointment

Extensions are the most misunderstood service we offer at Sølvi Salon. Clients come in thinking they know what they want and leave realizing they were asking for the wrong method. Before you book anywhere — not just here — here is what to understand about extensions so your first appointment actually goes the way you want.

The Main Methods

Not all extensions are the same. The method determines the look, the upkeep, and the damage risk.

  • Hand-tied wefts: sewn onto a beaded row. Most comfortable, best for fine hair, 6-8 week maintenance.
  • Tape-ins: flat strips applied between layers of your own hair. Fast install, 6-10 week reinstall cycle.
  • K-tips / I-tips: individual strands with keratin or silicone bonds. More precise placement, higher density.
  • Clip-ins: at-home, removed nightly. No salon install. Best for occasional volume.

What Drives Cost

Extensions are hair, labor, and maintenance. You are paying for all three. Quality hair from a reputable source runs hundreds of dollars before install. Install is 2-6 hours of chair time. Maintenance is every 6-10 weeks depending on your method. If you see a quote that seems suspiciously cheap, the hair quality is likely the corner being cut.

Will Extensions Damage Your Hair

Properly installed and maintained by a certified stylist, no. Poor installation — wefts sewn too tight, tapes pulled too hard, bonds placed on fragile hair — causes breakage and traction. The method matters less than the stylist doing it. Ask to see their portfolio of installs and removals.

What to Do Before Your First Appointment

  • Come with clean hair, no heavy product.
  • Bring photos of the final look you want (not just the install).
  • Be realistic about length. If your natural hair is at your shoulders, going to waist-length adds serious volume and weight.
  • Plan for a 30-60 minute consultation first. Most reputable extension specialists will not install on day one.

Color Matching

Good extensions look invisible because the color is dialed in. Your stylist may tone or even dimensional-color your extensions before install so they blend with your highlights or lowlights. This is normal and part of what you are paying for.

Daily Maintenance

Extensions need the same moisture as your natural hair, often more because they are not getting scalp oils. Use a sulfate-free shampoo, a weekly mask, and a lightweight leave-in. No leave-ins at the bonds or wefts. Brush with an extension-friendly brush from the ends up, twice a day. Braid or low-pony before bed.

What to Avoid

  • Heavy oils at the root or attachment point.
  • Sleeping on extensions wet.
  • Scrubbing at the bonds during wash.
  • Going longer than your stylist's recommended maintenance interval.

Is It Worth It

If you want length or volume that your natural hair cannot produce, extensions deliver. They require commitment, budget, and a stylist who knows the work. Done right, they look like your own hair had a great year.
