Curly hair has a short list of non-negotiables, and the wash is at the top. We get asked about it constantly behind the chair at Sølvi, usually some version of "why do my curls feel great when I leave and flat by Thursday?" Most of the time the answer starts with the shampoo. The Davines Love Curl Shampoo Refill Set is one we reach for in the studio and send home with curly and wavy clients, so here is exactly how our stylists use it at home, step by step.
First, a quick honest note. This is the refill set, priced at $45. It is built for people who already own their Love Curl bottle and want to top it up without buying a brand new container every time. If this is your first time with the line and you do not have the original packaging yet, start with the standard size and switch to the refill on your next round. That is the one group this is not for.
Why this shampoo earns its spot in Boise
Boise air is dry. Our high desert climate pulls moisture out of curls fast, and dehydrated curls are the ones that frizz, lose their spring, and tangle by midweek. Love Curl is formulated with almond and olive extracts that help define the curl shape while adding hydration, and it does that without leaving the heavy coating that makes curls go limp. For the texture clients we see year round in downtown Boise, that balance of moisture and lightness is the whole point.
Step one: rinse longer than you think
Before any product touches your hair, soak it. Curly hair is thirsty, and a proper rinse with warm water opens everything up so the shampoo can actually work. We tell clients to count to thirty under the water. This is also the moment your curls drink up some of the hydration they lose to dry Idaho air.
Step two: shampoo the scalp, not the lengths
Pour a coin-sized amount of Love Curl into your palms, rub them together, and work it into your scalp with the pads of your fingers. The scalp is where oil and buildup live, so that is where the cleansing matters. Let the suds slide down the lengths on their own as you rinse. Scrubbing the mids and ends roughs up the cuticle and invites frizz, which is the opposite of what curls need.
Step three: follow with conditioner and cream
The shampoo is one piece of the Love Curl routine, so it works best paired with the rest of the line. After you rinse the shampoo, follow with the Love Curl conditioner, then apply Love Curl cream to damp hair and scrunch upward toward your scalp to define the pattern. The shampoo cleans and preps. The conditioner and cream are what hold the shape through the week. These are companion products, not part of the refill box, so plan to have them on hand.
Step four: dry without wrecking the pattern
Skip the regular bath towel. Cotton terry roughs up curls and creates frizz. Use a microfiber towel or an old cotton tee, scrunch gently to remove excess water, and either air dry or diffuse on low heat. In our dry climate, a leave-in or a few extra scrunches of cream helps lock the moisture in before the air can pull it back out.
How often we tell clients to wash
Curly and coily hair rarely needs daily shampooing. For most of our curly clients, two to three washes a week keeps the scalp clean without stripping the natural oils that curls depend on. If your scalp runs oily or you work out hard, you may land closer to three. Pay attention to your own hair rather than a fixed schedule. The refill set lasts longer when you are not over-washing, which is part of why we like it for curly routines.
Every curl pattern behaves a little differently, and the right wash frequency and product amount depends on your texture, your density, and how Boise weather treats you. If you want a stylist to look at your hair in person and build a routine around it, that is what we are here for.
